Update to eye stuff. I thought everything was going great. Eye seemed okay, nothing bad happening. Followup to verify no "late-onset" Glaucoma.

Well, no glaucoma. However, said doctor noticed something you never want to hear. Retinal detachment. I have a minor retinal detachment, so minor that it wasn't affecting my vision. Doc says, go see a retinal specialist... you should see one as soon as possible... like today. I called one, and he can fit you in this morning. So I go... and it turns out I have a major retinal tear. However, due to the overall health of the eye, the detachment is very minor. So new Doc says, best way to treat this (without invasive surgery and how quickly it can be done) is using a laser to "weld" the retina back onto my eye. So, 20 minutes after that, and I'm getting laser surgery.

Eye is a little sore, but I hope this is it. Doc was optimistic everything would be fine, so here's to hoping.

Some things happen that just freak you out.

Last sunday, I got hit by a hockey ball in my right eye. Nice burst of pain, and then some swelling. Then I decided to look out of that eye to see if things were blurry, or what. Well, I couldn't see anything except for a field of gray. That's it. Nothing but gray from that eye.

I went to the ER, and for about 4 hours, I couldn't see anything from my right eye. That's something that just freaked me out. Eventually I began to see indistinct shapes. The reason for the lack of sight was blood in the fluid of my eye. It was blocking the light. It wasn't a burst vein, so it was just free blood floating around. It was slowly dissipating, and by monday I could see mostly. Things had a little haze to them.

Overall good news, no orbital bone fractures, no scratching of the cornea, no glaucoma.
Bad news, retinal swelling, and a possible traumatic cataract.

Time will tell on the cataract and the swelling will go down (it probably already has).

Have a followup with the doctor on saturday.

Been sporting this nice black eye since then, with the burst blood vessels leading the way over the bruising (dark red wound as opposed to a more bruise-like look).

I've had better weeks.

It's a wonder what large groups of people can do for one's psyche.

Work yesterday had maybe 1 in 5 people wearing something related to Virginia Tech.

I went out with a couple of friends to a bar I haven't been to in awhile. At least half of the bar was wearing maroon or orange. There was a fair amount of support coming from those who hadn't been to tech directed to random Hokies who just happened to be there.

It made me feel better. Drunken bonding can work wonders. Hell, I'll probably never see most of those people again. Doesn't matter though.

Current Mood: crushed
There are certain points in your life where things just crush you. Sometimes they just strike a chord. It might be that I know really well where all of these things happened. The phone-camera video was taken from an exact place where I've stood before. So many times I walked from Burger King to Randolf, passing right by Norris Hall. The exact patio where that video was filmed. I had classes in the very rooms where people were shot.

I find myself tearing up at random times during the day when I think about what happened. I read new information the victims... who they were, what they did. And it just hits me. Reality has begun to sink in, and I don't like it. Not one bit. This is going to hurt for awhile.

I don't know many people down at tech any more, but seeing those locations on campus make me feel like I never left. I spent 5 years walking those halls and walkways. I don't know how I'd handle it if I was down there now, still taking classes.

It's going to be rough time for the next while.

I lived in West Ambler Johnston.

I had classes on the second floor of Norris Hall.

It's going to be awhile before this sinks in.

**stares at the bottom of his beer**

Gonna need a few more of these too.

Apr. 11th, 2007 @ 11:36 pm Bah, taxes!
I'm getting money back from my tax return, yet I've managed to wait till the week before it's due to actually do them. And of course, I now need to go find a couple of more things to deduct (paperwork is... somewhere) so I get more money back. Oh well, should be able to find them relatively easily, but it'd be nice to have this crap done already.

Other interesting news of note. My aunt took command of the 89th Airlift wing two weeks ago. Very nice posting for her. Especially since her command has a couple of rather visible aircraft in it. Namely Air Force One and Air Force Two. I snagged a tour of AF 2 after the change of command ceremony. Very nice plane. I sat where many VPs and high ranking government officials have flown around the country. Was a really fun day.

I usually play flag football every saturday morning at an elementary school near my house.

A couple of weeks ago, a girl's lacrosse team has started to practice there on another field. They look to be 13-15 years olds. Last week, I got there a little early, and was standing in the parkinglot when a minvan pulled up. This older guy got out, and walked up to us (me and one other guy who were there early). He comes up and goes, "Hi, I'm Amy's dad. Which one's yours?" At which point we told him we were there to play football, not pick up our daughters. Made me feel just a tad old.

Course, after we told this story to one of the other football players who is a teacher, he told us about one of his students. A 14 yearold with a 2 year old daughter. Gah

This is one of the beams from the parking garage that trapped my dad's car for awhile. Apparently you can fit your hand into the crack, and this beam is one that directly supports one of the floors.

Weird day today.

My dad had apparently been doing some work for the government in a building next to mine for a couple of days. I've eaten at that building once or twice recently and haven't seen him. Then today there was an interesting occurance.

I was walking towards the cafeteria, and I usually enter the building near a door by the loading docks. Well, they were turning everyone around and sending them to the front door, which is quite aways away. Turns out with the snow we had recently, and with the cars there, one of the support pillars on the parking garage began to crack. I saw my dad there, and had lunch with him. Well, turns out that GSA decided to close the garage... with many people's cars still in it. They determined that it was unsafe for anyone to be in it.

Ended up giving my dad and one of his co-workers a ride home. Interesting day.

Well.. two things to annoy me today. First, I saw people setting up a place to buy christmas trees already. That's just wrong. Way too wrong.

The other is... I've managed in all my years of sport playing and general rough housing to never get seriously injured to break a bone... till last weekend. I broke my finger (which has been making typing this rather difficult). Bleh.

Nov. 2nd, 2006 @ 08:06 pm Part 2
Well, reunion weekend was a very long weekend. After the "bar" reunion I had a football game saturday morning at 10. Then I rested up a bit and went off to the "official" reunion. Very much like the earlier reunion, but with more people and everybody dressed up. It was just as weird as the first one, with all these people that I recognized, but didn't always remember a name for. However, there were a lot more people there that I knew well in high school. Seeing one of my first girlfriends after 10 years was funny, especially since her fiance had asked her to point out all her old boyfriends from the high school days. I think I was the only one of them there.

Had the same group of "sad" people there. Bigger group this time however. Sometimes I think I should feel sorry for them, being that they're still living in high school. Then I decided that it's not worth it.

I saw a lot of people that I wanted to see again. However, there were about 6-7 people that weren't there that I really wanted to see how they were doing. Conversely, there were a couple of people that I really didn't want to see, and they weren't their either. So I guess there's that.

Met up with some old friends who are going to try and stay in touch somewhat by getting together every once and awhile. There were more people settled in this area than I thought there were. Which isn't so bad, all things considered.

Many more teachers in my class than I thought there'd be.

One of my former classmates brought her newborn. Her 11 day old newborn son. 11 days! Course, he slept through the entire thing. Kinda weird for her to bring him though. I dunno.

When I was in High School, we went to a restaurant called the Amphora quite often. It was open 24/7, so it was our Denny's. Well, we decided to have a throw back to that time in high school. We went to the Amphora after the reunion. I ended up getting home at about 2:30, bed by 3. Only to get up at 8 for my 10 am softball games. Considering the amount of alcohol and sleep I had, I'm surprised I managed to get up. Then I had a deck hockey game that night. Apparently I played an inspired game.

In the end, I needed another weekend to recover from my weekend. But it was a damn good weekend.

Part 1 of 2 of my 10 year HS reunion is over. Last night was the informal gathering at a bar nearby. Let's just say... it was weird. All these people that I recongnize, but didn't always have a name connected to that face. It's too bad that not everyone who went to the drinking night will be able to make it to the "official" re-union. Considering how expensive it is, I fully understand. It's a nice dinner party, open bar, dinner and music. So the price is understandable.

There were about 40-45 people there. And the funny/sad part was that there was a clique in HS that managed to stay in their own little group at the bar and tended to not break out of it. A couple people did, but not many. The rest of the people there mingled around which was nice. Met up with some people that I'll probably try see again.

We'll see how the "fancy" reunion is tonight.
